Diggins Named USA Today Baseball Weekly All-American

WASHINGTON-USA TODAY Baseball Weekly named 13 athletes to its 3rd annual All-America College First Team; honoring them for outstanding ability on the baseball field, at the plate and on the mound. College writer Dana Heiss Grodin picked the players based on their speed, power and excellence as a team player.

Following are the 13 First Team members and their colleges:

* Starting Pitcher Kip Bouknight, University of South Carolina
15-0 with 16 starts and 2.66 ERA over 121 2/3 innings

* Starting Pitcher Shane Komine, University of Nebraska
135 strikeouts and 11.5 strikeouts per 9 innings with 1.70 ERA

* Starting Pitcher Justin Wayne, Stanford University
16-1 record with 329 career strikeouts

* Relief Pitcher Cory Scott, East Carolina University
21 saves and 0.81 ERA over 33 1/3 innings

* Utility Player Ben Diggins, University of Arizona
9-3 as a pitcher with 110 strikeouts and nine home runs in 109 at-bats as DH

* Catcher Brad Cresse, Louisiana State University
.399 batting average with 24 homers and a 24-game hitting streak

* First Baseman Todd Faulkner, Auburn University
.419 batting average with 22 home runs and 95 RBI

* Second Baseman Chris Burke, University of Tennessee
.977 fielding percentage, 109 hits, and 119 consecutive starts at second base

* Shortstop Tim Hummel, Old Dominion University
.405 batting average through 53 games with a .967 fielding percentage

* Third Baseman Mark Teixeira, Georgia Tech
Switch hitter with a 19-game hitting streak

* Outfielder Mitch Jones, Arizona State University
25 home runs - 12 times with runners on base
