TUCSON--No. 18 Nebraska (50-19) outmuscled fifth-seeded
Illinois State to
give the Cornhuskers a first-round victory, 8-0, in NCAA Region
2 softball
action at Hillenbrand Stadium.
Nebraska jumped on the board in the first with a one-out
single by Ginger
Taylor and a home run by Jennifer Lizama.
Consecutive fielding errors by ISU (26-32) with one out
in the third
allowed Nebraska to score five unearned runs on Kim Ogee's
subsequent RBI
single and a grand slam by Jamie Fuente. Fuente's blast came
after ISU
pitcher Nicole Kurth (16-12) intentionally walked Lizama.
NU pitcher Leigh Ann Walker (21-5) scattered three hits
and struck out five.
The Redbirds will play the loser of the Arizona-Middle
Tennessee State
game in an elimination contest at 5 p.m. Friday. Nebraska meets
South
Carolina (40-26)in second-round winner's bracket action at 7:30
p.m.
