TUCSON--A two-hitter by sophomore Jennie Finch and a barrage of 15 hits by
the Wildcats paced No. 2-ranked Arizona (52-7), the top seed in Region 2,
to a 10-0 NCAA softball victory over fourth-seeded Massachusetts.
The loss eliminated the Minutewomen at 35-23. UMass was making its 10th
NCAA tournament appearance but dropped two games in Tucson by 10-0 and 9-0
scores. It was the first time since 1996 that UMass was swept from a regional.
Arizona stranded two runners, but scored once using two hits and two
stolen bases in the top of the first to take an early lead.
Lauren Bauer led off with a single and stole second, Nicole Giordano
walked, Bauer moved to third on a flyout, Giordano stole second, and Bauer
scored when Toni Mascarenas' fly ball to left was lost in the sun and
dropped in for a single.
The Cats added three runs in the second on a two-run doube by Giordano and
a later error which allowed her to score from second.
The Wildcats will play the winner of Friday's last game, a winner's
bracket contest between Nebraska and South Carolina, in the first Saturday
matchup at 2:30 p.m.
