Madera, Calif. The eighth-ranked University of Arizona men's golf team
has a two-round total of 18-under-par 558 at the NCAA West Regional and
trails first place Brigham Young by just one shot going into tomorrow's
final round. The Cats, who are attempting to win their first NCAA West
Regional crown since 1993, carded a 278 today at the Riverbend Golf Course
(Par-72, 6,966 yards) after firing a 280 yesterday.
Arizona senior Derek Gillespie shot a 69 today and is now tied for first
place with BYU's Parker McLachlin and USC's Alex Kuyumjian at 7-under-par
137. The trio own a one shot lead over a group of six golfers who are tied
for fourth at 138.
Only eight shots separate the first through sixth place teams. Fresno
State and USC are tied for third at 560, UNLV is fifth at 564 and New
Mexico is sixth at 565. Pacific-10 Conference champion Arizona State is
seventh at 568. The top-10 finishing teams will advance to the NCAA Men's
Golf Championships, which are set for May 31 - June 3 in Auburn, Ala.
Following Gillespie, Arizona sophomore Cody Beyer is among a group of six
golfers who are tied for 10th and two shots off the lead at 5-under-par 139
(70-69). UA freshman Reid Hatley shot a 68 today and moved from a tie for
49th and into a tie for 18th at 3-under-par 141 (73-68). Another freshman,
Ricky Barnes is tied for 27th at 2-under-par 142 (70-72) and senior Scott
Moore is tied for 81st at 149 (72-77).
The tournament concludes on Saturday with 18 holes on the schedule.
