Game 7 - 2:30 p.m.
TUCSON--Regional top seed Arizona (56-7) hit three home runs and scored 12
runs in the third inning to break open the game en route to a 13-0 mauling
of second-seeded Nebraska (51-20) in NCAA Region 2 softball semi-final play
Saturday.
Meantime, UA pitcher Becky Lemke tossed a one-hitter to improve to 29-5.
The victory puts Arizona in the title game at 1 p.m. Sunday against either
Nebraska, South Carolina or Illinois State, depending on later action.
Either of the teams would have to beat the Wildcats twice on Sunday, first
at 1 p.m., then again in a repeat game around 3:30 p.m.
Lindsey Collins hit a three-run home run, Allison Andrade had a sac fly,
Erika Hansen and Katie Swan hit RBI singles, Toni Mascarenas hit a grand
slam and Chrissy Gil hit a two-run homer to cap the scoring. The Cats had
nine hits and sent 15 batters to the plate.
Arizona took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Nicole Giordano and
Katie Swan had infield singles, Toni Mascarenas beat out a bunt and then NU
pitcher Leigh Ann Walker's wild pitch allowed Giordano to score. Lindsey
Collins then walked, but Walker pitched out of a bigger jam by getting the
final two outs on a popup and strikeout.
NU had scored 19 runs in its first two games of the regional and has not
beaten Arizona since 1987, in nine tries.
