Box Score
TUCSON, Ariz.Keoni DeRenne, Kenny Huff and Mike Meyer each drove in three
runs as Arizona defeated third-ranked Arizona State, 19-11, in Tucson
Friday night in the first contest of a three-game series.
Arizona improved to 26-28 on the season, 8-14 in Pac-10 play. ASU fell to
40-13 and 15-7. The Sun Devil loss, combined with UCLA's 10-9 victory over
Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif., clinches at least a tie for the conference
title for the Bruins. UCLA stands two games ahead of both ASU and Stanford
with two contests remaining for each club.
The Cats scored three runs in the third inning to take the lead for good,
then added six more in the fourth. Huff drove in three of those nine runs
with a double and a single. ASU closed within 11-9 after five and a half
innings, but Arizona put it away with three in the sixth and five more in
the eighth. Meyer reached base four times in the contest, including three
hits. Ernie Durazo scored three runs.
Sophomore right-hander Ben Diggins picked up his 10th win in what was
likely his final Wildcat appearance on the mound. He is the first Arizona
pitcher to earn 10 wins in a season since Scott Erickson in 1989. Senior
righty Mike Crawford worked the final 3.2 innings to earn his second career
save and his first of the year. Jon Switzer allowed nine runs (seven
earned) over 3.1 innings to pick up just his second loss of the season.
Junior catcher Casey Myers homered twice and drove in four runs for the Sun
Devils. Junior right fielder Jeff Duncan reached base five times and scored
three runs.
The two teams will meet again Saturday at 7 p.m. at Sancet Field before
wrapping up their respective regular seasons Sunday at 1.
