TUCSON, Ariz.Senior left fielder Mitch Jones hit for the cycle and broke
Bob Horner's 22-year-old single-season school record for home runs as
Arizona State defeated Arizona, 24-10, in Tucson Sunday afternoon to earn a
share of the Pac-10 title.
The Sun Devils improved to 42-13 with the win. They clinched a share of the
Pac-10 regular-season title with both UCLA and Stanford, thanks to the
Cardinal's 17-11 victory over the Bruins in Palo Alto Sunday afternoon. The
three teams finished with identical 17-7 league marks, but Arizona State
will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament since it
took two of three games from both UCLA and Stanford. Arizona finished the
year 26-30 and 8-16 in the Pac-10.
Jones doubled in a pair of runs in the first, was hit by a pitch in the
second and drove in another run with a single in third. After flying out in
the fifth, he hit a three-run homer, his 26th of the season, to left center
off senior right-hander Mike Crawford, surpassing Horner's 1978 school mark
in the sixth inning. After collecting another single in eighth, Jones
tripled in the ninth to become the first Sun Devil in three years to
achieve the cycle. For the day, Jones was 5-for-6 with three runs scored
and six RBI.
Junior center fielder Jeff Duncan went 4-for-6 with four runs, while junior
catcher Casey Myers scored four times and drove in three, including his
16th home run of the year.
Arizona was led at the plate by junior right fielder Ryan O'Donnell who
went 4-for-5 and drove in four runs. Senior center fielder Troy Gingrich
reached base four times and scored three runs.
After falling behind 6-1 and 10-6, Arizona battled back to within one after
six innings, but ASU put the game away with 14 runs over the last three
innings. Senior lefty Tony Milo (5-7), the first of eight Wildcat pitchers,
