Tucson, Ariz. After winning the 2000 NCAA Golf Championship by 21
strokes and finishing first in its final eight tournaments of the season,
the University of Arizona women's golf team closed out the year ranked No.
1 in the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings for the 13th consecutive week.
Winners of nine of its 11 tournaments during the 1999-00 campaign, the UA
won the program's second national championship last Saturday in Sunriver,
Ore. Individually, each member of the Arizona NCAA title team finished the
year ranked among the nation's top-30.
Arizona senior Jenna Daniels (Bonita, Calif.) won the individual medalist
honors at the NCAAs last weekend and moved back into the No. 1 spot in the
final poll after spending the previous week at No. 2. The Pacific-10
Conference Women's Golfer of the Year, she won three tournaments this
season and never finished any lower than 15th.
Sophomore Cristina Baena (Pereira, Colombia), who tied for 10th at the
NCAA Championships, finished ranked No. 8. She had six top-10 outings this
season and won the Rainbow Invitational on March 30.
Freshman Julia Kraschinski (Whitianga, New Zealand), who was the second
place finisher at the NCAA Championships, was ranked No. 15. Senior Jill
Gomric (Belleville, Ill.) was ranked 20th, while junior Christina Monteiro
(Las Vegas, Nevada) finished the year ranked No. 30.
