A Look at the Cats:
The 10th-ranked Wildcats opened the conference schedule
last Wednesday with a five-game victory over Arizona State in Tempe. The
Cats battled back from a two-game defecit to win the match over its
intrastate rival. Arizona then swept through Utah, downing then 10th-ranked
BYU 3-1 and 18th-ranked Utah 3-0. The Wildcats outhit the Cougars, who had
knocked off No.1 Stanford and No. 5 Long Beach State a week earlier, .356
to .234. Arizona used a .365 attack percentage, while limiting Utah to
.112, to knock off the previously unbeaten Utes.
A Look at the Cougars and Huskies:
Washington State got off to a red-hot
start winning its first eight games in a row before falling to UCLA and USC
in its Pac-10 opening weekend in Los Angles. The Cougars fell 3-0 to both
the Bruins and Women of Troy. WSU ranks second in the Pac-10 with a 17.00
dig per game average and is fifth with a .237 hitting percentage. The
Cougars have ammassed 514 kills in 10 matches this season, its 15.58 kills
per game average is sixth best. Leading hitter, sophomore Holly Harris, is
tied for seventh in the conference with an attack percentage of .371.
Sophomore Chelsie Schafer is second in the Pac-10 with 0.54 service aces
per game and is sixth in digs per game with a 3.08 average. The two schools
have met 28 times with Arizona holding a 19-9 advantage over the Cougars.
Arizona swept the Cougars a season ago, winning 3-0 in both Tucson and
Pullman. The Huskies shared a similar fate in their conference opener,
falling 3-0 to USC and UCLA last weekend. Washington currently ranks
seventh in the Pac-10 with a .233 hitting percentage and sixth with a 14.75
dig per game average. Junior Lisa Underhill leads the Huskies with a .364
hitting percentage, good enough for 10th in the Pac-10. Arizona won both
matches last season, scoring a 3-0 victory in Seattle and a 3-2 triumph in
Tucson. UW and UA have met have 32 times with Arizona winning 19 times.
Pac-10 Player of the Week Part II:
Fresh off teammate Dana Burkholder
winning the conference honor comes fifth-year senior Marisa DaLee. The
Phoenix, Ariz., native had 47 kills on 79 attempts with only 10 errors
against Arizona State, 10th-ranked Brigham Young and 18th-ranked Utah. Her
.468 hitting percentage helped Arizona go 3-0 for the week and extend its
win streak to eight games. She also led UA with 17 total blocks for the
week. She tallied four block solos and 13 block assists. In the Wildcats'
five game victory at Arizona State on Sept. 13, she tallied 20 kills on 37
attempts with only five errors. She also collected six total blocks and
four digs. At 10th-ranked BYU on Friday, DaLee hit a game-high .462 with 16
kills on 26 attempts and three errors. She led both teams with six blocks.
At Utah on Saturday, she hit a season-high .625. She rapped home 11 kills
on 16 attempts with only a single error. DaLee has now hit .400 or better
in six straight matches and seven times in nine games this season. It is
the third such award for DaLee, who also earned the honor last season and
in 1998, and the 12th overall in school history. Burkholder claimed the
award a week ago.
Arizona in the Pac-10:
The Wildcat season-long hot hitting has placed them
atop the conference with a .360 team hitting percentage and 18.30 kills per
game average. UA has failed to hit over .300 as a team in just two matches
this season. Individually, Arizonas Marisa DaLee and Stefani Saragosa rank
1-2 in the Pac-10 with hitting percentages of .479 and .413, respectively.
Allison Napier is fifth at .389. The Cats also top all Pac-10 teams with a
16.73 assist per game average. Setter Dana Burkholders Pac-10-best 14.27
assist per game average would place the junior fifth in the confernce
among the team averages. Arizona ranks third as a team with 3.00 blocks per
game. Leading the way for the Cats is Saragosa, the sophomore ranks fifth
with 1.28 blocks per game.
Shooting Gallery:
The Arizona volleyball team posted impressive numbers in
last weeks three match sweep of Arizona State, Brigham Young and Utah. The
Cats hit .327 as team while limiting their opponents to .185. Arizona had
228 kills on 486 swings with 69 errors. Leading the way was fifth-year
senior Marisa DaLee who hit .468 in the three wins with 47 kills. Sophomore
Lisa Rutledge had a team-high 53, including 23 in UAs five-game win at
Arizona State and 21 more at BYU. In all, five Wildcat players hit .300 or
better for the week (DaLee .468, Saragosa .425, Napier .403, Talbot .348,
Rutledge .336).
Quick Work:
The one hour, 22 minute victory at Utah was Arizonas
second-fastest win this season. Arizona needed just an hour and 10 minutes
to subdue San Diego State Sept. 2.
Thrice as nice:
Junior setter Dana Burkholder collected her second career
triple-double Sept. 2, against San Diego. Her 10 kill, 54 assist, 10 dig
performance was the 19th triple-double in Arizona history, and just the
fifth by a Wildcat setter. Burkholder tallied her first triple-double a
season ago in Arizonas five game loss to UCLA on Oct. 11 when she had a
career-high 11 digs, 70 assists and 14 digs against the Bruins.
Keep it to a Minimum:
San Diego States 14 points in three games was the
fourth lowest point total for an Arizona opponent in a three game match in
school history. Cal State Fullerton mustered only 10 points in a 1983
meeting with the Cats.
School Records:
The Arizona volleyball team has already matched or bettered
a number of school records this season. In Arizonas victory over Arizona
State on Sept. 13, the Wildcats had 101 kills, breaking the previous school
best for a five game match of 96 set in 1986 against Oklahoma. The 91
assists in that same match tied Arizonas best team effort set in 1987,
again against Oklahoma. Junior Dana Burkholder had 84 of the 91 assists to
take over the top spot in the record book, breaking Heather McCormacks
1991 mark of 77. Arizonas team hitting percentage of .483 in its win at
San Diego State, Sept. 2, set a school record for accuracy in a three game
match. The Cats had 52 kills on 89 attempts while committing only nine
errors. The previous mark was held by the 1994 squad who hit .461 against
California.
Career Records:
Senior Marisa DaLees on-going streak of 256 games played
is the third-best run in Arizona history. She trails Barb Bells 383 and
current Arizona Associate Head Coach Charita Johnsons 348. Her 969 career
kills are ninth-best for the program and only 47 away from Kiyomi Morinos
eighth-place 1,016 . Junior Dana Burkholder has started 63 career matches,
tied for 16th-best at Arizona and tops among current team members. Her
12.89 career assist per game average is the best all-time at Arizona.
