Women Golfers Jump Out to Early Lead at Dick McGuire Invitational
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (Sept. 21, 2000) -- The top-ranked Arizona's women's golf team shot a one-under par 291 to jump out to a first round lead of four shots on day one of the Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
Individually, freshman Lorena Ochoa holds the lead after shooting 69 (-4) in just her second collegiate competition. Two other Wildcats, junior Laura Myerscough and junior Cristina Baena, are in the top 10.
The Wildcats' 291 puts them four shots ahead of 14th-ranked Pepperdine at 295 (+3) and 10 shots ahead of third place No. 6 Tulsa, 301 (+9). Host New Mexico is in sixth place after carding a 14-over 306. Fellow Pac-10 schools competing today include Oregon St., 305 (+14), UCLA, 310 (+18), and Washington, 316 (+24).
Ochoa led the Wildcats while shooting just 33 on the front nine. Myerscough also shot 3 on the front nine, but finished with a two-under par 71 to tie for second place. Baena carded an even 73 to finish the day tied for sixth place.
Also scoring for the Wildcats was senior Christina Monteiro, who completed the day at five-over with a 78. Senior Christelle Cuzon, who is competing in the tournament as an individual, came in at just a two-over par 75. Cuzon is competing for the first time since the '98-'99 season.
Play continues tomorrow at the University of New Mexico's Championship Course in Albuquerque. Tee-off is set for 8:30 a.m.
