TUCSON, Ariz.-- The 14th-ranked Arizona volleyball team finished off Santa Clara in three games, 15-1, 15-12, 17-15, to sweep its way to the Starwoods Plaza Wildcat Classic championship Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats out hit the previously unbeaten and red-hot Broncos .435 to .245 in a close three-game match. Arizona extended its winning streak to five games and improved its record to 5-1 on the season.
Individually the Wildcats had four players finish with double digits in kills, but it was the play of junior setter and tournament MVP Dana Burkholder that stood out. The Bakersfield, Calif., native hit .667 on a career-high 13 kills on 18 attempts with only one error. She also chipped in with 51 assists, six block assists and six digs.
Stefani Saragosa rounded out an excellent tournament with 12 kills on 21 attempts against the Brocos and Jill Talbot and Lisa Rutledge each added 10 kills apiece. Talbot also had a team high nine digs.
Senior Marisa DaLee narrowly missed out on joining her teammates in double figures as she tallied nine kills on 14 attempts.
Joining Burkholder on the all-tournament team were Rutledge, DaLee, and Talbot, Baylor's Stevie Nicholas and Santa Clara's duo of Ynez Carrasco and Amy Kohl.
The Wildcats begin Pac-10 Conference play Wednesday, September 13, as they travel to Tempe to take on Arizona State. First serve is 7 pm.
