Hilo, Hawaii - Ernie Durazo came home on the tail end of a 10th-inning double play
to score the winning run as the Arizona Wildcats squeezed by the
Hawaii-Hilo Vulcans 3-2 in the first of a four-game series.
Durazo singled to open the inning and moved to third on consecutive wild
pitches. Following Shelley Duncan's walk, Kenny Huff grounded to second
to start the double play.
The Vulcans (1-0) got on the board first as Brian Rooke led off with a
single then stole second and third. He scored on Ryan Petersen's fly out
to center.
Jason Shroyer's second inning two-run single gave the Wildcats (2-0) the
lead. Erik Torres and Marc Kaiser got onboard via Vulcan throwing errors
before Shroyer's shot to center.
The game was tied in the fifth as Mike Hobbs scored on Kaligo Oligo's
ground out to short. Hobbs walked to reach first and advanced to third
on an errant throw to first on Rooke's sacrifice.
Matt Abram and Durazo paired hits for the Wildcats while Shroyer
collected two RBI.
Chris Goodman came in relief for Sean Rierson in the fifth for the win.
In 5.1 innings, Goodman (1-0) game up three hits and two walks but
struck our two.
Following a walk to Vulcan Ian Young, Rob Elias entered the game and got
the final batter to ground out for the save.
Sergio Reyes (0-1) took the loss.
