Hilo, Hawaii - The Arizona Wildcats swept a doubleheader from the Hawaii
Hilo Vulcans, 3-2 and 12-1, at Wong Stadium.
Ernie Durazo's fifth-inning single scored Jason Shroyer to the Wildcats
the 3-2 victory in game one. Ken Riley was plunked to open the inning.
In an effort to push him to third, Shroyer laid down a bunt to third
base. A charging Mike Hobbs bobbled the ball and attempted a late throw
to first that was a step too late. Justin St. Clair put down a bunt to
advance both runner into scoring position. On the ensuing, play Riley
was called out as Hobbs snared Brad Hassey's grounder to third and
tagged Riley. With Shroyer on second and Hassey on first, Durazo stroked
a 1-2 pitch to center for the game winner.
The Vulcans (0-3) got on the board first as pitcher Marc Kaiser snared a
comeback grounder by Brian Rooke and threw it over the first baseman's
glove. Rooke raced to third on the play and later scored on Hobbs
grounder to short.
RBI singles by Shroyer and Riley put the Wildcats back on top. Matt
Abrum followed Shelly Duncan's single with a double to put two in
scoring position. Riley singled to third for the first run and Shroyer
followed with a shot up the middle.
Rooke singled to open the third and stole second as Hobbs struck out.
Petersen then knocked a 2-0 pitch into left to score Rooke.
Kaiser (1-0) picked up the win with a five-inning, four hit, two walk
and five strikeout performance.
Robert Shimabuku took the loss. He also went five inning giving up five
hits, three runs, no walks and striking out four.
In the nightcap, the Wildcats (3-0) pounded five Vulcan pitchers for 14
hits. Eric Torres was 3-for-4 with a double, homerun and two RBI. Ernie
Durazo was 4-for-6 with a double, triple and four RBI. Jason Shroyer was
2-for-3 with two RBI.
