TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona baseball team dropped a 12-8 decision to St. Mary's College at Frank Sancet Field Tuesday afternoon. A seven run fifth for the Gaels (1-1) proved to be too big an obstacle for the Cats to overcome. The loss snaps Arizona's two game win streak and drops the Wildcats record to 5-3 overall for the season.
Freshman Brian Anderson, who had strung together seven consecutive hits in two games, provided much of the offense for the Wildcats who tallied 12 total hits on the afternoon. Anderson, coming off a 4-for-5 performance in his first start last Friday, repeated the numbers on Tuesday, finishing the game with four hits, two runs and two RBI. The first-year Wildcat also clubbed the first home run of his collegiate career, a ninth inning, solo shot to center.
Sophomore Matt Abram continued his hot streak, recording three hits in five at-bats, driving in a run with his second home run of the season and scoring twice as well.
St. Mary's James Gaulke and John Engers each paired hits for the Gaels, driving in four and three runs, respectively.
Brian Shaffer picked up the win in relief of starter Mike Byer for the Gaels and Gabe Palma earned his first save of the season. Freshman Chris Goodman (1-1) took the loss tossing 4.1 innings while surrendering seven hits and five runs.
The two schools will meet again tomorrow for the rubber match of the three game series at 3 p.m. at Frank Sancet Field.
