Wildcats Sweep Lobos With 12-3 Victory in Series Finale

    The Arizona baseball team got another impressive pitching performance from a freshman and the offense rapped out 15 hits in a 12-3 win over New Mexico (0-6) at Sancet Field Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats (8-7) swept the three game series from New Mexico and have now won three games in row.

    Wildcat starter Chris Goodman scattered six hits over five scoreless innings to earn his first collegiate victory and extend the Wildcats' scoreless streak to 17 innings. Goodman struck out six Lobo hitters on the afternoon to bring the series total to 22 punch outs in 21 innings pitched for the three starters. Joe Little came on in the sixth and tossed 2.1 innings of two hit, two run relief and was followed by Rob Elias who closed out the victory with 1.2 innings worth of work. Two Lobo runs in the eighth would snap the Cats' season high scoreless streak at 19 innings.

    The Wildcats scored four runs in the first, three in the second, two each in the fifth and eighth and one in the sixth. Ernie Durazo's two run double in the first scored Brad Hassey and Erik Torres while extending his team leading hit streak to a career-best 18 games. Hassey finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. Matt Abram tagged his fourth home run of the season, a two run shot to center in the second, and added two more RBI on a single for a game-high four runs batted in for the game. Justyn St. Clair and Jeff Casper each drove in a pair of runs on the afternoon.

    The Wildcats and the All-Pro Alumni meet up tomorrow for their annual, seven inning exhibition at Sancet Field. The guest manager for the Alumni is Baseball Hall of Fame member Robin Yount. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. Tickets are available by calling (520) 621-CATS.
