Baseball Continues Winning Ways With Series Sweep of Texas A&M

    TUCSON, Ariz.- The Arizona baseball team swept its second consecutive season series with its 16-5 victory over Texas A&M at Sancet Field on Sunday. The Wildcats, who outscored the Aggies 37-16 in the three game series, have won six straight to improve their overall record to 11-7 for the season. The six game winning streak is the longest for an Arizona team since April 3-18, 1999 when Arizona won nine in-a-row.

    The Wildcats, who were dominant against the Aggies all weekend long, scored their 16 runs on 16 hits while batting around in three consecutive innings on Sunday.

    A&M would jump out to a an early lead for the third straight game, scoring two runs in the second and one in the third to lead 3-0.

    After retiring in order in the first two innings, the Wildcat bats broke out of their slumber in the home half of the third to start the three consecutive innings that Arizona would send nine hitters to the plate. UA recorded four runs in the third inning, five apiece in the fourth and fifth and two more in the sixth to make the score 16-4.

    Offensively, seniors Ernie Durazo and Erik Torres had impressive afternoons. Durazo extended his career-high hitting streak to 21 games with a 2-for-3, three RBI and three run performance while Torres, who hit .583 in the three game series, collected only one hit in the game but drove in four runs as well. Durazo's 21 straight games with a hit ties Diego Rico for seventh on the all-time Arizona list. Rico had 21 consecutive games with a hit in 1997.

    Red-hot sophomore catcher Ken Riley was 3-for-3 on the day with an RBI and three runs scored. Riley improved his overall season average to .320 with a strong 5-for-10 (.500) weekend. He also scored six runs and drove in three for the weekend. Rightfielder Shelley Duncan hit his team-leading seventh home run in fifth.

    Freshman Joe Little (2-0) came on in relief of Chris Goodman to work 2.2 innings and earn the win. A&M's Brian Strelitz (1-1) took the loss, surrendering six runs in 3.1 innings of work.

    The Wildcats will look to extend their winning ways next Friday when Utah comes to the Old Pueblo for a three game set. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
