Wildcat Women's Golf Extends Lead Over Duke, Rest of Field at Wildcat Invitational
TUCSON, Ariz. - The second-ranked Arizona women's golf team extended its lead over Duke and the rest of the field at the Wildcat Invitational on Tuesday by shooting a second round total of 290.
In a battle between the top two teams in the nation, Arizona currently holds a four-stroke lead over top-ranked Duke. No. 7 Texas, No. 4 Southern California and No. 5 Stanford round out the top-five.
Duke junior Candy Hannemann carded a second round of 69 to gain sole possession of first place with a two-day total of 140 (-4).
Arizona freshmen Lorena Ochoa and Natalie Gulbis continued their torrid play, shooting rounds of 71 and 72, respectively. Ochoa stands in second place at one-under-par 143, while Gulbis is tied for third at even par with Candie Kung of Southern California, Virada Nirapathpongporn of Duke and Suzanne Sowers of Texas. The Arizona freshmen have combined to win a total of three tournaments and have seven top-10 finishes in their first year of collegiate golf.
Sophomore Anne Lee of Arizona currently stands tied for ninth place with a two-day total of 147 (+3). Also scoring for the Wildcats were junior Cristina Baena, who stands tied for 23rd place with a two-day total, and sophomore Laura Myerscough who jumped into a tie for 29th after a second round of 73 (+1).
Three Wildcats are competing as individuals. Junior Cathie Williamson and senior Christelle Cuzon are tied for 67th place with two-day totals of 160 (+16). Senior Christina Monteiro shot a second-round of 86 and currently is in 89th place at 28-over-par.
The Wildcat Invitational wraps up action Wednesday with an 7:30 a.m. shotgun start at The Raven Golf Club at Sabino Springs.
