  • Box Score
  • TUCSON, Ariz.- Outfielder Shelley Duncan became the most prolific home run hitter in Arizona history with his two round trippers in Arizona's 18-11 loss to No. 22 Long Beach State, Sunday afternoon. The Wildcats (5-7) rapped out 17 hits on the afternoon, but would let a 6-2 lead slip away to give the 49ers (3-0) a series sweep. The Cats are currently in the midst of a five game losing streak.

Duncan's two-run blast to left field in the first inning off of LBSU starter Nate Beucler staked the Wildcats to an early 2-0 lead and gave Duncan 36 for his career and a share of the title with the previous record holder, Kenny Corley.

The career title would belong solely with Duncan when he clobbered a seventh inning, 1-0 pitch from 49er reliever Jason Berni over the centerfield wall for a three run blast to pull the Cats within one run at 12-11.

Long Beach State would score four unanswered runs in the eighth inning and two in the ninth to seal the victory and the sweep.

Duncan finished his historic day with three hits in four at-bats, driving in seven runs on the afternoon and scoring two as well. Senior Ernie Durazo had a monster game going 4-for-6 with two RBI and four runs scored.

Classmate Erik Torres picked up three hits and scored twice to give him a team-high 11 runs for the season. Brad Hassey, Matt Abram and Brian Anderson all paired hits for the Cats with Hassey scoring a pair of runs from the lead off spot.

David Brockman (0-1) took the loss for the Cats who will look to get back on the winning track when they entertain New Mexico for a three-game series Thursday-Saturday at Sancet Field.
