COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The No. 7 University of Arizona men's swimming
and diving team is in eighth place with 58 points after the first day of the
2001 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. Defending national
champion Texas is in first place with 185 points followed by Stanford (170),
Tennessee (114.5), Southern California (85) and Auburn (83). The three day
event is being held at the Texas A&M University Student Recreation Center in
College Station, Texas.
In the championship finals of the 200 freestyle relay the Wildcats placed
fifth swimming to the time of 1:18.04. Competing in the relay were junior
Roland Schoeman, freshmen Eric la Fleur and Tyler Johnson and senior Jay
Schryver. The Cats placed sixth in the consolation finals of the 400 medley
relay, 14th overall with the time of 3:16.84. la Fleur, Schoeman, sophomore
Jeff Dash and Schryver made up the 400 medley relay team.
In the consolation finals of the 500 freestyle senior Tyler Painter
placed sixth (14th overall) with the time of 4:20.84. Senior Ben Anderson
swam in the consolation finals of the 200 IM. Anderson also finished the race
in sixth place (14th overall) at 1:47.78.
Senior Nate Dusing of Texas broke the NCAA record, the American record,
the US Open record and the pool record when he swam to the time of 1:42.85 in
the championship finals of tonight's 200 IM. Texas also had a relay team
break all four records tonight (NCAA, American, U.S. Open and pool). The
Longhorn relay team broke the records in the 400 medley relay, swimming to
the time of 3:05.37.
The Stanford Cardinal 200 freestyle relay team set a new pool record
when they touched the wall at 1:16.83. USC freshman Klete Keller set a pool
record in the 500 free at 4:14.67. Cardinal senior Anthony Robinson also
broke a pool record. Robinson broke the record in the 50 free (19.15) when he
upset California's Anthony Ervin the 2000 Olympic gold medalist in the 50m
free.
The second day of the 2001 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships
will be tomorrow, March 25. Prelims will begin at 12 p.m. C.S.T. followed by
finals at 7 p.m. C.S.T.
