Trojans Rally To Hand Wildcats 6-4 Loss

  • Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz.- The USC Trojans rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to defeat the Arizona baseball team 6-4 at Sancet Field Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Wildcats to 19-14 overall and 2-3 in the conference while USC improves to 17-10 and 3-2 in the Pac-10

The Wildcats scored three runs in the first off of Shelley Duncan's 13th home run of the season and an unearned run in the second to take the early lead, but the bats would go silent and the Trojans would roar back to go ahead 5-4 with a four run fifth inning. USC's Michael Moon accounted for the most damaging blow with a two run blast to right field. USC would tack on another run with a highly unusual balk call by home plate umpire Jeff Henrichs on Daryl DeSalvo with the bases loaded in the eighth.

Arizona would threaten with runners on second and third in the home half of the eighth, but would come up short as Henrichs called Shelley Duncan out on strikes, Matt Abram grounded out to short and pinch hitter Kyle Tasco was called out by Henrichs on a third strike up in the zone.

Erik Torres had a nice game for the Cats as the senior finished 3-for-4 on the afternoon. Sean Rierson (3-3), who pitched well, suffered his third loss of the season surrendering five runs in 5.1 innings. USC's Rik Currier earned his fifth win of the season despite the rocky start. Currier tossed seven innings while surrendering all four runs, only three of which were earned, on eight hits.

The two schools will meet for the series finale on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
