The University of Arizona women's track and field team blew away the competition at the Jim Click Wildcat Shootout Saturday at Roy P. Drachman Stadium, while the men's team finished second behind Nebraska.
Led by three event wins by junior Brianna Glenn, the women's team scored 191.50 points, easily outdistancing second place Georgia (156.50). Nebraska was third (153), and Oklahoma finished fourth (139). Nebraska won the men's title with 192 points, as Arizona finished second (150.50) followed by Oklahoma (147.50) and Georgia (138). The Huskers also took the combined title 345-342 over Arizona.
Glenn was her usual excellent self, winning the 100m, 200m and long jump at the meet. All three of her performances were NCAA provisional qualifying marks, as well. She coasted to a wins in 11.48 seconds in the 100m and 23.59 in the 200m. Her long jump mark of 21-feet (6.40m) was one of the most impressive performances of the entire meet, only one-tenth of a meter off the NCAA automatic standard.
Senior Rori Kelly won the 100m high hurdles with a personal-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 13.49, the No. 4 time in school history. She also ran the 400m hurdles for the first time, finishing third in 66.79, just behind her teammate, junior Rebecca Nott, who finished second in 65.51.
Senior Mike Kenyon was equally impressive on the men's side of the meet for the Wildcats. He won the 400m in 45.97, an NCAA provisional qualifying time, and finished second in his "off" event, the 200m, with a PB time of 21.03. His 400m teammate, sophomore Matt Lea ran a PB in the quarter-mile, 46.78, to finish second.
The Arizona women also dominated in the middle distance and distance races, winning all four and finishing at least one-two in three of the four races. Junior Tara Chaplin led a 1-2-3 finish in the 3,000m, running 9 minutes, 55.63 seconds, ahead of freshman Beth Hoge (10:16.05) and sophomore Kim Bates (10:26.27).
Senior Erin Doherty won the 1,500m in 4:33.48, edging Hoge (4:37.31). Senior Katrin Engelen won the 3,000m Steeplechase (10:42.70), followed by sophomore Nicole Gurnicz (10:49.66), who was second. Junior Danielle Price also won the 800m (2:11.55).
Junior Angela Foster picked up two second place finished in the throws for the Wildcats. She threw 153-0 (46.64m) in the discus and 185-4 (56.50m) in hammer.
Junior Steve Smith won the men's 3,000m Steeplechase in 9:11.03, while his freshman teammate Mark Anderson finished third in 9:21.25.
The Wildcat men also picked up two second place finished in the throws, as junior Mike Rexroth placed second in the discus with a throw of 164-7 (50.16m), and sophomore Matt Wagner was second in the javelin with a toss of 202-8 (61.78m).
