Wildcat Women’s Golf in Second at Dr. Thompson Rainbow Invitational
Oregon State holds the tournament lead after shooting a team total of 299. Oregon State’s Stacie Ferguson owns the individual lead with an opening round of two-under-par 70.
Leading the Wildcats are freshman Natalie Gulbis and junior Cristina Baena. Gulbis is tied for second place with a first-round of 71 (-1). Today’s round is Gulbis’ seventh round at or below par on the year. Baena carded an opening round of 73 (+1) and is tied for fourth place. Baena’s 73 is her lowest round since shooting a second-round 73 at the Stanford/Pepsi Invitational, where she finished tied for ninth.
Sophomore Laura Myerscough shot an opening round of 75 (+3) good for a tie for 12th place. Also competing for the Wildcats are sophomores Anne Lee and Julia Kraschinski. Both carded first-rounds of 81 and are tied for 61st place.
Wildcat freshman Lorena Ochoa, the nation’s top-ranked golfer, is not competing in the Rainbow Invitational because she just wrapped up play in the Nabisco Championship, one of the LPGA tour’s major tournaments. Ochoa tied for 21st at the Nabisco with a score of 290 (+2).
Round two at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Rainbow Invitational begins tomorrow with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. Arizona is seeking its fifth tournament title of the season and its third consecutive championship.
