Wildcats Sweep Away Islanders With 13-0 Shutout

  • Box Score

TUCSON, Ariz.- Shelley Duncan hit his Pac-10 leading 19th home run of the season and Chris Goodman and Jason Martinez combined for a three hit, seven inning shutout of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Frank Sancet Field Saturday afternoon. The three Islander hits in the mercy rule, 13-0 win were the lowest for an opponent this season. The shutout was the second for UA this year.

The Cats jumped on the Islander pitching staff for five runs in the first two innings. Arizona scored three in the first off of sac-flies by Duncan and Matt Abram and a RBI single by Brian Anderson, and two in the second on a Jeff Casper RBI ground out and an Ernie Durazo double.

Meanwhile, Goodman cruised through the Texas A&M-CC lineup, retiring the side in order through the first 4.2 innings before finally giving up a single up the middle to catcher Jimmy Fly in the fifth. The ground ball base hit was the lone hit off of Goodman (3-1), who struck out four and walked none. Martinez came on in the sixth and seventh to wrap up Goodman's third win of the season.

Duncan, who finished the three game set with 10 runs scored and eight RBI, launched his sixth home run in five games in the fourth inning. The lined shot to left just cleared the fence to give the Cats 6-0 lead. The junior, who holds Arizona's all-time home run record with 50, needs only four more round trippers this season to tie George Arias for the UA single-season record.

Junior Brad Hassey followed his 4-for-4 performance on Friday with a 3-for-4, three run outing on Saturday. The leadoff hitter finished the series 8-for-11 (.727 avg.) with eight runs scored.

The Cats complete their non-conference season with a trip to Grand Canyon College on Tuesday and resume Pac-10 play at home against Cal next Friday-Sunday.
