Glenn Burns Another Fast Time At Mt. SAC Relays

University of Arizona junior Brianna Glenn ran another very fast time at the Mt. SAC Relays Sunday, leading the Wildcat men's and women's track and field teams at the meet.

Glenn won the Invitational 100m with a wind-aided time of 11.16, the fastest time run by any American woman this year. Glenn already has the fastest time in the U.S. collegiate ranks this year, 11.21w, which she ran two weeks ago to win the Invitational 100m at the Texas Relays.

She trailed USC's Torri Edwards in the race, but Glenn came back to beat her in the final 20 meters of the race. Glenn's time, however, could have been faster.

"She actually leaned at the wrong time. She leaned too early," Arizona sprint coach Fred Harvey said. "She probably could have run even faster, in the 11.0-something range. Brianna just dominated the field, especially the way she came from behind to get (Edwards)."

Glenn's effort was the dominant one for the Wildcats at the meet, but there were several other quality performances throughout the weekend.

Sophomore Nicole Gurnicz ran a personal-best time in the 3,000m steeplechase for the second week in a row, setting a school record in the event in the process. Gurnicz ran 10:21.32 in the Invitational steeplechase Friday night, just off the NCAA automatic standard. The steeplechase, a new event for women in 2000, record at UA was previously set by senior Katrin Engelen. She ran 10:23.47 March 30 at the Stanford Invitational.

Engelen did not run the steeplechase at the Relay, but also had a big PB in the event she did run. She clocked a time of 16:33.28 in the 5,000m, an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Freshman Beth Hoge also came in under the provisional standard in the race, running a PB of 16:37.17.

On the men's side, junior Steve Smith ran a PB and NCAA provisional qualifying time in the men's steeplechase. He ran 8:51.82 to finish seventh in the Invitational steeplechase.
