Pullman, Wash.- The Arizona baseball team's 10-inning, 14-11 victory over Washington State was all too similar to the plane ride to get to Pullman, Thursday night. A whole lot of shaking and a bunch of ups and downs would describe both the flight and the game. The two teams combined for 25 runs, 30 hits and nine errors for the afternoon. The victory evened UA's Pac-10 record at 5-5 and raised its overall record to 22-16 for the season.
Arizona would enjoy a 4-1 lead through four innings off of a two RBI triple by Erik Torres, a RBI triple off the bat of Justyn St. Clair and a RBI single by Shelley Duncan. But just as the Wildcats seemed to be cruising comfortably, the Cougars jolted the Cats for nine runs in the fifth. Powered by six hits, including a grand slam by WSU's Mike Knight, the Cougars bounced to a 10-4 lead through five.
Arizona began its climb back into the game with a single run in the sixth, four in the seventh and and then tied and retook the lead with two runs in the eighth to make it an 11-10 lead. The Cougars extended the game with a lone run in the bottom of the ninth, but three runs in the top of the 10th ended the wild affair.
Offensively, six Wildcat starters collected mutiple hits and five scored two or more runs. Freshman Brian Anderson lead both teams with a 4-for-6 effort. He also drove in three and scored twice as well. Shelley Duncan and Ken Riley each finished 3-for-6 scoring three and two runs, respectively.
Senior Daryl DeSalvo tossed the ninth and tenth innings to pick up his second win of the season.
Arizona and Washington State continue the series Saturday with game two of the three game set. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. The game can be heard live on 790 AM KNST.
