PULLMAN, Wash. - Despite Matt Abram hitting for the cycle and seven Wildcat home runs, the Washington State Cougars staved off an Arizona sweep with its 17-14 victory over the Wildcats Sunday afternoon in Pullman. WSU collected 18 hits off of six different Arizona pitchers. The loss drops the Cats to 23-17 overall for the season and 6-6 in the Pac-10.
Abram, who joins nine other Wildcats on the cycle list, hit a triple in the first, doubled in the third, homered to left in the fifth and singled up the middle in the seventh. He joins teammate Kenny Huff and Scott Stanley for Wildcats to go for the cycle against Washington State. Abram finished the game 5-for-5 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored.
Shelley Duncan hit his second two-out, two run home run of the series with a 425-foot blast to left field in the first that banged off the Cougar scoreboard. But the early 2-0 lead wouldn't hold up, as the WSU plated three off of Wildcat starter David Brockman in the home half of the first and five a piece in second and third for a commanding 13-5 lead.
The Cats made things interesting with four runs in the top of the ninth to close within three, but WSU's Donny Davis came on to shut Arizona down and preserve the win.
The Wildcats take a break from Pac-10 action next weekend as they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for a three game set Thursday-Sunday.
