HUMBLE, Texas - Arizona's No. 13-ranked Maja Mlakar was upset by No. 85-ranked teammate Dianne Hollands Sunday at the Rice Tennis Classic in Humble, Texas. Arizona's fourth-ranked doubles team of Mlakar and Debbie Larocque also was upset by No. 29-ranked Valerie Vladea and Michaela Havelkova of Minnesota.
In the final round of top flight singles play, Hollands defeated Mlakar by a score of 6-4, 6-3, claiming the top-flight singles crown. Junior Debbie Larocque won the consolation bracket by defeating Long Beach State's Lindsey Marvel, 6-2, 6-2.
In the second flight, sophomore Kelly Perry defeated LBSU's Claudia Argumedo, 6-4,
6-4, to claim fifth place. Sophomore Marie-Pier Pouliot fell to Karen Chao of Lee College, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Freshman Kristy Randono defeated Cristina Mancheno of Lee College, 6-0, 6-2, to claim fifth place in the third flight of singles action.
In the final round of top-flight doubles action, Arizona's duo of Mlakar and Larocque was upset by Minnesota's Vladea and Havelkova, 8-6. Mlakar and Larocque claimed second place, while teammates Hollands and Pouliot took third place by defeating Minnesota's Nischela Reddy and Jeanette Cluskey, 8-3. In the consolation bracket, Perry and Randono won the battle for third place by blanking Cici Anderson and Kandis Batiste of Minnesota, 8-0.
The women's tennis team will rest for a week before heading to the All-American Championships in Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 6-13.
