TUCSON, Ariz. - Two University of Arizona student-athletes were selected to the 2003 Verizon Academic All-America At-Large teams, in voting released by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Women's diver Claire Febvay and sophomore men's swimmer Chad Ainsworth both were named to the national At-Large third team.
Febvay, a junior from Stavanger, Norway, carries a 3.902 grade point average in Psychology and helped the Wildcats to a ninth-place team finish at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. She earned All-America honors at the 2003 Championships with a sixth-place finish in the 10-meter platform. Febvay also finished second at the NCAA Zone E 10-meter platform championships and 14th at the Zone E's on the one-meter springboard competition.
She posted a fifth-place finish at Pac-10 Championships in the 10-meter event after winning 10 of a possible 11 home diving events during the regular season. Febvay was a UA Mary J. Roby Academic Award winner as well. On July 16, she finished seventh in the 10-meter platform finals at the 10th FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, which qualified her for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
Ainsworth, a sophomore from Lee Summit, Mo., carries a 4.00 grade point average in Accounting and was Arizona's fastest swimmer in the 500-yard (4:28.90), 1,000-yard (9:23.06) and 1650-yard (15:31.63) freestyle events. He finished eighth in the 1650-yard freestyle and 11th in the 500-yard freestyle (4:28.90) as the Wildcats took fifth at the 2003 Pac-10 championships in addition to two other top-25 finishes. Ainsworth was a 2003 Pac-10 all-academic selection and a Mary J. Roby Academic Award winner.
The at-large category includes student-athletes in the following men's or women's sports: crew, gymnastics, skiing, fencing, ice hockey, swimming, water polo, field hockey, lacrosse, tennis, golf, rifle and wrestling. To be eligible for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a sophomore academically, carry at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be voted to the first team in one of eight districts nationally.
Febvay and Ainsworth are the second and third UA student-athletes to garner Academic All-America accolades in 2002-03, joining men's track and field team member Mike Mortensen. All told nine Arizona student-athletes earned all-district honors this season.
Since 1968, 68 Arizona student-athletes have earned Academic All-America honors.
