Men’s and Women’s Diving Head to Washington for Pac-10 Championships
The Weeks Schedule: The No. 2 Wildcat women’s swim team will travel to Federal Way, Wash., this week for the 2001 Pac-10 Championships. Last year Arizona became the first team besides Stanford to win the title. The meet will be held from Feb. 22-24 at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. Along with the Wildcats, the participants include Arizona State, California, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Washington and Washington State.
The Cats Last Outing: Arizona hosted ASU in their last meet of the regular season. The Wildcats placed first in 12 of the 14 events. They captured first in both the 400 medley relay (3:44.63) and the 400 free relay (3:28.45). The medley relay team consisted of sophomores Beth Botsford and Amanda Beard and juniors Erin Vogt and Jenny Vanker. The free relay team was made up of juniors Caroline Kilian, Michelle Engelsman, Amy Bouta and Beard. Individually, Botsford and Beard both placed first in three events. Botsford won the 100 back (56.31), the 200 back (2:15.18) and the 100 fly (56.11). While Beard took first place in the 100 breast (1:03.27), the 200 breast (2:15.18) and the 400 IM (4:27.08). Junior Sarah Tolar won two events for the Cats, the 1000 free (10:01.83) and the 200 free (1:49.06). Engelsman and Vanker each won individual events as well. Engelsman touched the wall in the time of 23.66 to capture the 50 free. Vanker won the 100 free in the time of 51.50.
In men’s diving, junior Omar Ojeda broke two school records. He scored 415.88 points on the one meter to place first and 402.03 points on the three meter to again place first. Junior Ruben Vaca placed second on the three meter with 372.08 points and third on the one meter with 388.88 points. Freshman Alex Vollelunga placed third on the three meter with 350.63 points.
In women’s diving, freshman Claire Febvay broke the school record on the three meter, scoring 342.15 points. Febvay placed second on the one meter with 319.88 points. Senior Adrian David finished first on the one meter, scoring 348.45 points. David placed second on the threee meter with 326.03 points. Senior Lindsay Berryman scored 304.05 points on the one meter to finish in third place.
The Conference of Champions: The 2001 Pac-10 Championships feature some of the top teams in the country. The latest CSCAA-Top 25 poll includes six Pac-10 teams in the top-20, No. 2 Arizona, No. 3 Stanford, No. 4 California, No. 6 UCLA, No. 10 USC and No. 17 Arizona State. In all, six 2000 individual Pac-10 champions are back to defend their eight crowns. They are Arizona’s Amanda Beard (200 breast), Beth Botsford (200 back) and Sarah Tolar (200 free), California’s Staciana Stitts (100 breast) and Stanford’s Jessica Foschi (500 free/1650 free) and Shelly Ripple (100 back/200 fly). One NCAA individual champion will participate at the Pac-10s, Botsford (200 back) won an NCAA title in 2000. Team results at the NCAAs found five Pac-10 teams in the top-8. Arizona was runner-up to national champion Georgia, followed by Stanford and California. USC placed seventh while UCLA came in eighth.
Last year marked the first year in the Pac-10s then 13 year history, where a school other than Stanford won the tilte. Arizona captured their first-ever title at the 2000 Pac-10 Women’s Championships scoring 1,325 points.
Pac-10 Diving: Teams from Arizona, Arizona State, California, Stanford, and USC will compete for the 2001 Pac-10 Men’s Diving Championship. Teams form Arizona, Arizona State, California, Stanford, UCLA and USC will compete for the 2001 Pac-10 Women’s Diving Championship. Both diving championships will take place at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.

Cats in the Polls: In the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America Top-25 Poll, the Arizona women’s swimming and diving team held their No. 2 spot while receiving three first place votes. The men’s team holds onto the No. 7 spot. On the women’s side Georgia is ranked No. 1 followed by Arizona (No. 2), Stanford (No. 3), California (No. 4) and Auburn (No. 5). The top-five men’s teams are Texas, Tennessee, Stanford, Texas A&M and Auburn.
The Facts: The women finished the 1999-2000 season in second place at the NCAA Championships behind the Georgia Bulldogs. The women’s team won the Pac-10 title in the 1999-2000 season, becoming the first team ever to take home the title besides the Stanford Cardinal. The final dual meet record for the women was 9-2 and 4-1 in the Pac-10. The women return 21 letterwinners after losing only seven.
The men’s team both returned and lost 13 letterwinners from the 1999-2000 team. The men’s dual meet record last year was 5-3 and 2-2 in the Pac-10. The men finished the season third at the NCAA Championships, the highest finish ever for the Arizona men’s swimming and diving team.
The Wildcats Next Outing: The Arizona men’s swimming team will host the 2001 men’s Pac-10 Championships in Long Beach, Calif., March 1-3. The men’s and women’s diving team will travel to Seattle, Wash., for the Zone "E" diving championships March 9-10. For NCAAs the women’s team will travel to Long Island, NY, March 15-17 and the men’s team will travel to College Station, Texas, March 22-24.
