The Weeks Schedule: The No. 7 Wildcat men’s swim team will travel to Long Beach, Calif, this week to partake in the 2001
Pacific-10 Championships. The meet will be held from March 1-3 at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool. Along with the Wildcats the
participants include Arizona State, California, Southern California, Stanford and Washington.
The Cats Last Outing: Arizona hosted ASU in their last meet of the regular season. The Wildcats defeated the Sun Devils for the
first time in three years, 179-121. The Arizona men’s team captured first place in 10 events. Junior Roland Schoeman placed first in
three individual events. Schoeman swam to the time of 19.69 in the 50 free, a new Hillenbrand Aquatic Center pool record.
Schoeman won the 100 free (44.04) and the 100 fly (48.99). Senior Tyler Painter also finished first in three events. The 1000 free
(9:24.08), the 500 free (4:27.74) and the 400 IM (3:58.24). Sophomore Jeff Dash placed first in the 200 fly, touching the wall at
1:48.69. Winning the 200 backstroke was junior Kris Souther (1:48.77) while freshman Greg Owen placed first in the 200 breast
(2:02.70). The Cat’s 400 free relay team, made up of senior Scott Gaskins, freshman Eric la Fleur, senior Jay Schryver and
Schoeman, took first place with the time of 2:58.76.
The Conference of Champions: The 2001 Pac-10 Championships feature some of the top teams in the country. The latest
CSCAA-Top 25 poll includes all six Pac-10 teams, No.3 Stanford, No. 5 California, No. 7 Arizona, No. 8 Southern California,
No. 13 Arizona State and No. 25 Washington. The Wildcats are led by 2000 Pac-10 Coach of the Year Frank Busch. Busch also
earned honors as the women’s swimming Coach of the Year, marking the first time that a swimming coach has earned both honors in
the same season. Last year Arizona finished fourth at the Pac-10s, but turned in a third-place finish at NCAAs, the school’s best
finish ever.
The Wildcats are led by junior Roland Schoeman and senior Tyler Painter. Schoeman will hed to the 2001 NCAAs as a
result of his automatic qualifying times in the 50 free and the 100 fly this season, Schoeman also holds the nations top times in these
two events. Painter holds the nations fastest times in three events, the 500 free, the 1650 free and the 400 individual medley. In all
three events Painter has swam to NCAA qualifying times.
Cats in the Polls: In the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America Top-25 Poll, the Arizona women’s swimming
and diving team held their No. 2 spot while receiving three first place votes. The men’s team holds onto the No. 7 spot. On the
women’s side Georgia is ranked No. 1 followed by Arizona (No. 2), Stanford (No. 3), California (No. 4) and Auburn (No. 5). The
top-five men’s teams are Texas, Tennessee, Stanford, Texas A&M and Auburn.
The Facts: The women finished the 1999-2000 season in second place at the NCAA Championships behind the Georgia Bulldogs.
The women’s team won the Pac-10 title in the 1999-2000 season, becoming the first team ever to take home the title besides the
Stanford Cardinal. The final dual meet record for the women was 9-2 and 4-1 in the Pac-10. The women return 21 letterwinners
after losing only seven.
The men’s team both returned and lost 13 letterwinners from the 1999-2000 team. The men’s dual meet record last year was
5-3 and 2-2 in the Pac-10. The men finished the season third at the NCAA Championships, the highest finish ever for the Arizona
men’s swimming and diving team.
The Wildcats Next Outing: The Arizona men’a and women’s diving teams will travel to Seattle, Wash., to participate in the Zone
"E" Diving Championships March 9-10. The Wildcat’s women’s wimming and diving team will haed to Long Island, N.Y., for the
2001 NCAA Championships March 15-17. The men’s swimming and diving team will compete next at the 2001 NCAA
Championships in College Station, Texas, March 22-24.
