Chaska, Minn. (June 2) - The Arizona men's golf team opened play of the 1999 NCAA
Men's Golf Championships with a 15-over-par 303 and is tied with
Minnesota and Illinois for 16th place. The 72-hole tournament, which is
being held at the Hazeltine National Golf Club (Par-72, 7,196 yards), is
led by Oklahoma State, who carded a 1-over-par 289. The Cowboys will take a
three shot lead over second place Georgia (292) into the second round.
After Thursday's action, the field of 30 teams will be cut in half and the
top-15 squads will advance into Friday and Saturday's third and final rounds.
Following Oklahoma State and Georgia, there is a two-way tie for third
between Brigham Young and Clemson, who are at 293, while North Carolina
rounds out the top-five at 294. Defending national champion UNLV is sixth
with a 296 and 1999 Pac-10 and West Regional champion Arizona State is in a
three-way tie for eighth at 297.
Individually, East Tennessee State's Chris Wisler fired a 4-under-par 68
and is in first place by two shots over a group of five golfers who are
tied for second at 2-under-par 70. After that, there is a six-way tie for
seventh at 71.
The next group, which includes Arizona's Derek Gillespie, is made up of
nine golfers who are tied for 13th, four shots off the lead at even-par 72.
Gillespie shot a 35 on the front nine and a 37 on the back to card his
even-par round.
Following Gillespie on the leaderboard for the Cats is Scott Moore, who
shot a 3-over-par 78 (39-37) and is in a 15-way tie for 48th. The rest of
the Wildcat lineup includes Andy Barnes, who shot a 77 (39-38) and is tied
for 78th; Cody Beyer, who is tied for 108th with a 79 (38-41) and Tim
Weiss, who is tied for 119th with an 80 (39-41).
The top-nine individuals who are not members of a team that makes the cut
will also advance into the third and final rounds.
