Circle K Outstanding High School Faculty Awards Program, Teacher Profile

Nemer Hassey earned his Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1992 at the University of Arizona and in 2003 earned his Master of Arts in Education at Northern Arizona University.

As an Instructional Team Leader/Department Head, Mr. Hassey provides leadership and direction to all the math teachers at Cienega High School. As a Cognitive coach for new teachers, Nemer has worked with 24 teachers, one on one to assist them in becoming master teachers.  Along with being the Cognitive Coach for teachers, he works closely with the District’s Staff Development Coordinator to implement the High School components of New Teacher Induction. Nemer has developed remedial courses and programs for students who are not currently successful in math, which includes the Peer Tutoring Program.  Currently, Mr. Hassey is developing the High School to Elementary School Outreach Tutoring Program where high school football players work with elementary students on homework.  He does this as a way for the football players to give back to the community.

Mr. Hassey has planned a remedial math course for low achieving students and is monitoring the progress to implement best teaching practices to ensure that students are presented with math instruction tailored to fit the individual needs of the student.  He is also involved in assisting with the coordination of an AIMS preparation course to prepare the math students for upcoming AIMS test.

Nemer Hassey is a teacher that is concerned about the future of his students.  Although Mr. Hassey is a highly respected head football coach by students and peers, he would not hesitate to pull players from the game for not meeting the academic and behavior expectations in the classroom. He is a “teacher first and a coach second.”   He is a no-nonsense type of math teacher.  By implementing the Essential Elements of Instruction, a structured delivery of instruction that is predictable, the students know what to expect by the end of the week.  This structure delivers success.

At “Nemer Hassey’s Football Camp”, 148 students from Kindergarten through 8th grade participate in this week long camp.  To these children, Nemer is like the “Michael Jordon” of Vail.  During this week he involves current and past football players to assist with the coaching activities for the participants.  It is an opportunity for the younger students to build relationships with the high school athletes and coaches. At Vail Pride Day, Nemer has coordinated the Athletic Olympics that once again allows the younger students to interact with the high school students.  Lastly, by developing solid relationships with the community business owners, Mr. Hassey secured $19,000 in donations for supplies and materials that allowed the construction trades class to build the press box at the stadium.

Mr. Hassey embodies the Vail School District mission:  “Where Education is a Community Effort.”
