Frye garners second team kudos from Basketball Times; Stoudamire a second team AP pick
TUCSON, Ariz. ?- University of Arizona men’s basketball players Channing Frye and Salim Stoudamire earned All-America honors, it was announced earlier this week.
Frye was a second team All-America selection by Basketball Times, while Stoudamire was also a second team pick by the Associated Press. It marks the ninth consecutive season in which Arizona has had at least one All-American. Stoudamire and Frye are the 20th and 21st players to earn All-America distinction in school history.
Frye was joined on the Basketball Times second team by junior Dee Brown of Illinois, senior Eddie Basden of Charlotte, junior Sean May of North Carolina, and junior Ike Diogu of Arizona State.
Frye, a 6-foot-11, 248-pound senior center from Phoenix, Ariz., earned All-America honors for the first time in his career by leading Arizona in field goal percentage (.544), rebounding (7.4 rpg) and blocked shots (2.2 bpg). He ranks second on the team in scoring (15.6 ppg) and free throw percentage (.839). Frye has finished in double figures 31 times in 2004-05, including a streak of 25 consecutive. He’s posted seven double-doubles this year. Frye currently ranks ninth on the Arizona career points scored list with 1,737 and ranks second with 249 career blocked shots.
Joining Stoudamire on the Associated Press’ second team were junior Dee Brown and senior Luther Head of Illinois, junior Sean May of North Carolina and junior Ike Diogu of Arizona State.
Stoudamire, a 6-foot-1, 179-pound senior guard from Portland, Ore., earned All-America honors for the third time in his career by leading Arizona in scoring (18.6 ppg), free throw percentage (.914), three-point field goal percentage (.513), and three point field goals made (3.38 per game). He is also second on the team in field goal percentage, hitting 51.1 percent of his shots. Stoudamire has finished in double figures 29 times in 2004-05, including 16 games with 20 or more points. He currently ranks fourth on the Arizona career points scored list with 1,932. He was also an all-Rockies region pick by Basketball Times.
No. 9 Arizona (29-6, 15-3 Pac-10) will next be in action on Thursday, March 24, at the 2005 NCAA Chicago Regional semifinals in Rosemont, Ill. The Wildcats meet Oklahoma State. Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 9:15 p.m. CST and can be seen nationally on CBS-TV.
