TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona knocked No. 1-ranked Washington from its lofty perch, beating the Huskies 16-3 in front of 58,510 homecoming fans in Arizona Stadium. UA earlier had knocked Miami from the top spot with a near victory.
The second-largest crowd in stadium history - and the only non-Arizona State game sellout since 1976 - watched Arizona take advantage of four Washington turnovers and earn its fifth straight victory.
UA's Steve McLaughlin kicked two field goals following Husky turnovers. The first gave UA a 3-0 halftime lead as the Cats' defense extended a streak of allowing no '92 first-half touchdowns.

UW tied the game at 3 shortly into the third quarter and the teams traded possessions after that. In the fourth quarter, the UA used a 17-play, 7-minute drive to set up McLaughlin's second field goal and minutes later Jim Hoffman recovered a fumble on the UW 22. McLaughlin kicked his third of the day to put the Cats up, 9-3. Keshon Johnson later picked off a pass after safety Tony bouie knocked the ball loose from a Husky receiver to stop a Washington drive. The Cats had to punt - one of Josh Miller's eight kicks for a 47.5 average - but held and got the ball back for a six-play drive for the final score, a George Malauulu dive.
The Cats' Billy Johnson carried 21 times for 99 yards and the Arizona defense held the Huskies to 90 yards rushing. Johnson's effort earned him Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week, the fourth weekly honor for Arizona players in '92.
