MONTREAL (AP) -- South African Roland Schoeman set the world record in the 50-meter butterfly at the World Swimming Championships on Monday, breaking his own record set just a day earlier in the semifinals.
The former Wildcat clocked a time of 22.96 seconds in a furious sprint from one end of the pool to the other, beating his Sunday time of 23.01.
American Ian Crocker, the record holder coming into the meet, settled for second in 23.12 - 0.18 ahead of his old mark. Former Wildcat swimmer Ryk Neethling finished fourth. The 50 fly is not part of the Olympic program.
''Not bad for an African,'' quipped Schoeman, a three-time medalist in Athens. ``I'd like to dominate the sprints in the future. I'll give it a shot.''
