Fourteen former University of Arizona football players are on active rosters in the National Football League for the 2005 season.
The list includes NFL regulars in cornerback Chris McAlister of the Baltimore Ravens, offensive guard Edwin Mulitalo of the Ravens, punter Josh Miller of the New England Patriots, linebacker Lance Briggs of the Chicago Bears, linebacker Antonio Pierce of the New York Giants, wide receiver Dennis Northcutt of the Cleveland Browns and tight end Brandon Manumaleuna of the St. Louis Rams.
Receiver Bobby Wade of the Chicago Bears was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week today after returning a punt 73 yards for his first career touchdown against the Detroit Lions on Sunday in the Bears' big 38-6 victory,
Three-time Super Bowl champion Tedy Bruschi, a starting linebacker for the Patriots, is sitting out the 2005 season after stuffering a stroke in Feburary following the Pro Bowl, but remains active with the team. Colts guard Makoa Freitas is on the injured reserve list after playing the past two seasons.
Twelve-year NFL veteran linebacker and special teams stalwart Brant Boyer, was released by the Browns in August. 2004 Wildcat seniors Steve Fleming (TE, Giants/Packers), Chris Johnson (OL, Texans) and Andre Torrey (DE, Patriots), had tryouts in NFL camps this past summer. Nine-year NFL veteran offensive guard Frank Middleton (Tampa Bay, Oakland) was released by the Miami Dolphins in late August. Former Titan and 49ers linebacker Ray Wells was waived by San Francisco two week ago.
