Wilbur and Wilma Wildcat just renewed their wedding vows to celebrate their twentieth anniversary. Wilbur and Wilma first tied the knot on November 21, 1986 during the Arizona-Arizona State Football game. Wilbur became a fixture on The University of Arizona campus by 1959 (47 years ago!) and has entertained a number of generations of students through his fierce devotion to Arizona Athletics. Did you know they first met on a blind date and married later that year to a stadium sized crowd during halftime?
On November 25, 2006, UA’s President Robert Shelton conducted the wedding ceremony for the vow renewal during halftime of the Arizona-Arizona State football game. The cheerleaders served as ushers and the wedding party.
At the wedding President Shelton asked Wilbur if he agreed to support Wilma in her effort to make kids smile. He of course said yes! And, Dr. Shelton asked Wilbur if he would make every effort to protect Wilma from Sparky the Sun Devil, the Cal Bear, the USC Trojan and the Oregon Duck. And of course Wilbur agreed to be her protector.
Dr. Shelton then asked Wilma if she agreed to support Wilbur in his effort to protect the University, crowd surf in the student section, represent the school and its alumni and not be jealous of his female fans. Wilma said absolutely!
Then with the power vested in Dr. Shelton by the Board of Regents and as President of the University, he pronounce them Cat and wife
