Second Round Quotes
Friday, May 19, 2006
Bruce Brockbank, Head Coach, Brigham Young University
“We shot even par today which is not very good. We had some great opportunities to score better, but we didn’t get it done. It was a perfect day weather-wise, but we didn’t take advantage of it. Tomorrow we will have to put up much better scores.”
Oscar Alvarez, senior, Brigham Young University
“I played horrible today. I only had one birdie and I just didn’t feel good all day. There was perfect weather, no breeze and not too hot, you couldn’t ask for more than that.”
Randy Lein, Head Coach, Arizona State University
“We had a very good day today. It was nice to see our four and five guys do well and contribute. For us to win the NCAAs, the one, two and three guys have to be good, but the four and five guys need to be as well, and our guys did that today. I feel really good.”
Lenny Park, senior, Arizona State University
“I had a good day. I started on 10 with a birdie and was able to finish the front nine at even par. I was able to birdie two in a row twice on the front nine and finished four-under par. My short iron was working really well for me. The weather was a huge difference today. Teeing off in the morning was a lot better, the heat didn’t get to me nearly as much.”
Buddy Alexander, Head Coach, University of Florida
“We didn’t play very good today. We were kind of ho-hum, nothing exciting about our game today. To shoot six-under after our day yesterday is a little disappointing. I’m not happy with how we played today. Theoretically, you are supposed to play better in the morning. There is less wind, and the greens are supposed to be easier, but that didn’t happen for us today.”
Matt Every, senior, University of Florida
“I played boring today. I couldn’t get into a rhythm, I didn’t hit as well today. Two-under is still respectable, it will probably be my worst round. Hopefully, I didn’t take myself out of the tournament.”
Fred Warren, Head Coach, East Tennessee State University
“We played better today, had two guys with low-rounds. We played solid golf, unfortunately this course has some bite to it. There is a lot of pressure out here. Hopefully we’ll finish in the top 10 today.”
Gareth Shaw, sophomore, East Tennessee State University
“I’m quite happy, no bogies helped. I had 13 pars and five birdies. The key was keeping the ball in play and just keeping the momentum going. My putter was pretty good for me today.”
Ryan Baca, senior, Baylor University
“My round was boring. I missed every putt and finished with a bogey. I hit the ball well and had an eagle on the second hole to start well.”
Jay Seawell, Head Coach, University of Alabama
“We didn’t play very well today, I guess we are just not adjusting to the west coast like we had hoped. We didn’t make our putts and if you don’t make those you’re going to get lapped.”
Mark Harrell, sophomore, University of Alabama
“I didn’t putt very well today. I hit well, but not many putts. Tomorrow is another day.”
Ryan Donovan, Head Coach, San Diego State University
“It was moving day today and we were just not moving. We are not making any birdies and just not having good putting overall. Tomorrow we are going to have to shoot really low.”
Rick LaRose, Head Coach, University of Arizona
“We played really well today. We shot 15 under (par) which is a little better than yesterday. I’m feeling good about where we are right now. Henry (Liaw) came back after a disappointing day yesterday and had a stellar performance. Everyone did really well and I’m hoping that we will stay in the lead with Florida and ASU.”
Henry Liaw, junior, University of Arizona
“I did really well today. I came out playing like I wanted and started off under par and finished in a good position. The team is playing well and we are all working really hard. We have to hang in there because the tournament is not over yet. The course is not the most difficult, which is why we have seen so many low scores in the past couple of days. We just have to keep playing our game.”
Matt Thurmond, Head Coach, University of Washington
“We played well on the front nine. I am a little disappointed with how we finished. The last four or five holes were rough. It’s real easy to get caught up in how the other teams are doing, but if we play well, we’ll put ourselves right there.”
Zach Bixler, sophomore, University of Washington
“I hit a bunch of good iron shots and butchered the par fives.”
Richard Sykes, Head Coach, North Carolina State University
“We played really well. We played with a good Arizona team and they kind of dragged us along.”
Nathan Spoon, freshman, North Carolina State University
“I struggled a little bit today, got off to a slow start. Coming around the turn I got going, make a good putt on number one and birdied number two. I was able to gain some confidence and finish strong.”
Conrad Ray, Head Coach, Stanford University
“We played great. Rob (Grube) was five-under on the back side and was able to hang in there. It was warm even in the morning. The biggest thing is to hope that the wind can help you out, but not too much.”
Rob Grube, sophomore, Stanford University
“I played really poorly on the front and really well on the back. I had two totally different nines.”
Glen Millican, Head Coach, University of New Mexico
“We played better than yesterday. We still had a few mistakes that kept it form being a good round. Charlie Beljan’s 68 was great. Steve (Saunders), a true freshman, had a 70 which is a good round. Jai Choi played solid, but two guys struggled and that kept us from having a great round.”
Charlie Beljan, junior, University of New Mexico
“I played solid. I hit the fairways and greens. I was hitting the ball solid. I need to hit a few more putts tomorrow and make it a good round.”
Ryan Witz, senior, Washington State University
“I putted really well and I hit better, but I had too many little mistakes.”
Ryan Wood, junior, Long Beach State University
“It went a little better today than yesterday. Yesterday was rough. I was a little shaky, but I got it around for some good putts for par.”
Derrick Whiting, junior, Colorado State University
“I had too many doubles. I had six birdies but that’s about it.”
John Geiberger, Head Coach, Pepperdine University
“Not especially pleased with how we played today. We shot around par, which doesn’t really put us anywhere. The wind swirled around. It’s no fun not to advance from here.”
Alex Coe, senior, Pepperdine University
“I played steady today and shot a 69. I didn’t putt like myself today. In the morning the wind was more calm. I like playing in the morning, you get up and do your thing, but either way it’s golf.”
Vince Jarrett, Had Coach, University of Houston
“Things got bad as we started out, and it was hard for us to catch up. It was the first time in a while that our guys have been here and competing at this level so there is bound to be some nerves. Tomorrow we want to play the best we can, have a positive outlook and take that into next year.”
Zach Mowbray, senior, University of Houston
“I played better today. I was hitting the ball better. I am used to the weather, being from Phoenix, so it didn’t bother me. It was nice to get to the West Regional and get back to my home state.”
Mark Crabtree, Head Coach, University of Louisville
