A Look at the Opponents?- The women’s squad will face two nationally ranked teams, including the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal, who currently post a record of 5-0 (1-0 Pac-10). Stanford will be returning to the water for their first competition since December 2, 2006, when they finished second at the Texas Invitational with 756 points.
The Stanford men are currently ranked second in the nation with a 1-0 overall record (0-0 Pac-10). The Cardinal last competed at the Texas Invitational as well, finishing third overall with 543 points. On Nov. 19, the Stanford men captured the 2006 Speedo Cup for the fourth year in a row, beating 15 teams with a total of 1,803.5 points.
The No. 4 Cal women are currently 6-0 overall, (1-0 Pac-10). The Golden Bears will also return to the pool for the first time since Dec. 3, 2006, when they finished second at the Georgia Fall Invitational in Athens, Ga. with 928 points.
What Happened Last Year ?- On Jan. 20, 2006, No. 5 men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams posted their first losses of the season to Stanford at the Avery Aquatic Center. The women (7-1, 4-1 Pac-10) fell to the No. 3 Cardinal (11-0, 2-0 Pac-10) 137-106, while the men (3-1, 2-1 Pac-10) were defeated by No. 2 Stanford (2-0, 2-0 Pac-10) 127-115.
On Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, both Arizona squads posted their second losses of the season against California. The women fell to No. 6 Cal 178-122, while the men posted a 202-98 loss the No. 3 Golden Bears.
Arizona’s Last time in the Water ?- Despite the poor weather conditions at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center last weekend, the men’s team upset No. 4 California, 124-118 for the first time in 14 years, while also downing No.12 Michigan, 122-121.
The women also had a successful meet, as they began the second half of the 2006-07 season with a double victory over Oregon State and Northern Arizona, maintaining a perfect record of 5-0 (3-0 Pac-10).
