TUCSON, Ariz. ?C Arizona sophomore Preston Guilmet added to his postseason recognition with first-team All-America honors from Baseball America, the publication announced on Friday.
The right-hander, who previously was named the 2007 Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year, a first-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and was one of 10 national semifinalists for the Roger Clemens Award, posted one of the most impressive seasons at UA in recent memory.
The sophomore went 12-2 in 2007 with a 1.87 ERA in 135 innings pitched. He recorded 146 strikeouts in 2007, which not only tied for the fourth-most in a single season in school history but were the most for any UA pitcher since Dan Schneider punched out a school record 186 batters in 1962. He went six or more innings in all 17 starts in 2007, tossed five complete games and went nine innings in six starts. Additionally, Guilmet became just the 15th pitcher in school history to log 130 or more innings pitched during a season.
As the ace of the pitching staff, Guilmet led a group of Wildcat arms that finished with the second-most strikeouts in school history, the lowest team ERA in 30 years and the fewest hits, runs and earned runs since 1978.
