TUCSON , Ariz. ?C The University of Arizona menˇ?s golf team stands in a tie for eighth place Friday after the first round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship in Las Vegas, Nev.

The Wildcats posted a first-round 297 (+9) and are among a group of three teams in eighth place.? UA managed one round at par individually during the opening 18 holes.? USC leads the 16-team field by three strokes after an opening-round 285 (-3).? UCLA and UNLV are tied for second place at 288 (E), one stroke in front of Charlotte and Georgia.

Leading the way for the Wildcats was Creighton Honeck.? The senior carded an opening-round 69 (-3) and is tied for third place in the field of 81.? It was his sixth round in the 60s this season.

Freshman Tarquin MacManus was tied for 34th place after carding a three-over 75.? He is one stroke ahead of teammate Tyler Neal, who tallied a four-over 76 and is in 43rd place. Freshman Roberto Galletti is tied for 53rd place after an opening-round 77 (+5).

Freshman Jonathan Khan, making his first appearance of the spring, is tied for 74th place after an 81 (+9).? Trey Denton, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 53rd place with a 77 (+5).
