UA Olympic Notes for Thursday, Aug. 14
** Jason Donald helped the U.S. baseball team rebound from yesterday's one-run loss by going 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored as the Americans downed the Netherlands, 7-0. Team USA broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning and two U.S. pitchers allowed just one hit. It was Donald's first Olympic appearance.
** The Lithuania men's basketball team moved to 3-0 in group A with an 86-79 win over the Russian Federation. Center Robertas Javtokas posted a solid all-around effort with seven points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots and two assists in the contest.
** Lacey Nymeyer finished in sixth place in the women's 100-meter freestyle semifinals in a time of 54.74 seconds. She did not advance to the finals. To date, Nymeyer is the only UA athlete to claim an Olympic medal in 2008 as part of the U.S. women's 4x100-meter relay team that claimed a silver.
** Lyndon Ferns (South Africa) qualified for the Olympic final in the men's 100-meter freestyle, but managed a sixth-place effort. His time of 48.04 seconds was 0.83 seconds behind winner Alain Bernard of France.
** Darian Townsend (South Africa) finished sixth in the semifinals of the men's 200-meter individual medley. His time of 1:59.65 did not qualify him for the finals.
** The World's Fastest Swimmer competition - the 50-meter freestyle, a one-lap sprint of the pool - got underway Thursday and UA alumnus Roland Schoeman (South Africa) is off to a good start. Schoeman won heat 13 with a time of 21.76 and will swim in Friday morning's (Beijing time) semifinals.
** Three Wildcats participated in the preliminaries of the men's 100-meter butterfly, as Juan Veloz (Mexico), Ferns and Albert Subirats (Venezuela) were all in action. Veloz placed fifth in heat four in a time of 53.58 seconds. Ferns won heat five in a time of 52.04 seconds and Subirats won heat eight in a time of 51.71 seconds. Ferns and Subirats advanced to Friday's (Beijing time) semifinals.
** The U.S. softball team has an interesting day ahead of it. The game against Canada was suspended due to rain in the top of the fourth inning with Canada leading 1-0. However, that game will be completed after the completion of the day's regularly scheduled game vs. Japan.
