Tucson, Ariz.- On the eve of the first practice of Fall Camp, Head Coach Mike Stoops addressed the media about his expectations, the issues he is most concerned with and what impact the newcomers will have on the team.
"We are very excited about being back," Stoops said in his press conference. "We have a lot to play for and a lot to prove."
Stoops is trying to guide the Wildcats to their first bowl game since 1998. This particular team gives Stoops a good feeling that the bowl drought will end this season in the desert.
"This is the best team we have had since I have been here," Stoops said. "We are very excited about the offense, defense and special teams. The important thing is to make sure we get out to a good start."
Some of the concerns Stoops has entering camp tomorrow will be finding a back-up for the quarterback and running back positions. In addition, Stoops hopes to develop some playmakers on the defensive line.
"When you have inexperience like we do on the defensive line, the most important thing is making things simple," Stoops said. "Making sure they are technically sound will be the first thing."
For the first time since becoming the head coach, Stoops is excited about the quality he has at the offensive line position. Leading the way on the line this year will be junior Eben Britton, who is on the 2008 Outland Trophy watch list selection.
"Since we have been here, this is the best o-line we have had," Stoops said. "It starts will Eben, who has a great passion for the game and a great work ethic."
This season, the Wildcats bring in 22 newcomers. With the addition of junior college transfers and incoming freshman, depth and talent will add to the weapons Coach Stoops can use.
"I am very impressed with the group," Stoops said. "They have a good work ethic and will add to our depth and give us speed and athleticism on special teams."
Offensively, the Wildcats have plenty of weapons that should allow for plenty of points. Leading the way will be seniors Willie Tuitama and Mike Thomas and sophomore Rob Gronkowski.
"I can't wait to get to the season," Tuitama said. "Once we get to that first game and the ball is kicked off, that's when I'll be really excited."
The Wildcats start practice tomorrow at 6:15 a.m. at the Rincon Vista Practice Facility on Tucson and Plumer. Practices are open to the public.
Arizona opens the season against Idaho on August 30 at Arizona Stadium. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
NOTES AND QUOTES
- Stoops announced that Ray Guy Award watch list member Keenyn Crier will miss some early action during Fall Camp while he recovers from a recent operation to remove a cyst from his back. Crier is not expected to miss extended time.
- Stoops noted that redshirt sophomore Glyndon Bolasky will get a look at safety during camp. A local product from Sabino High School, Bolasky spent his first couple years at running back.
- Veterans reported to campus to be fitted for equipment on Sunday, one day after newcomers reported.
- "Our offensive line is as deep and experienced as it has been since I've been here. I'm real comfortable with the guys up front and they are going to be a big reason for our success this year," said Davey O'Brien and Maxwell watch list member Willie Tuitama.
- "Today was a pretty laid back day since we were only getting fitted for our equipment. We're excited to start camp, but I can't wait for the season to get here. We have a lot of work to do, but we'll be ready once we begin the season against Idaho."
