OKLAHOMA CITY -- Arizona's Brittany Lastrapes, Stacie Chambers and Brittany Lastrapes were named All-Americans today by Louisville Slugger and the National Fastpitch Coaches Associaiton.
They give Arizona head coach Mike Candrea a staggering 82 of the 83 All-America honors earned by UA softball players since 1984. He's now had 37 individuals earn multiple NFCA All-America honors.
Sophomore outfielder Lastrapes was a first-team selection, repeating after last year's citation for third-team honors. Senior third baseman Leles and junior catcher Chambers earned third-team honors, their first NFCA honors.
The Cats had three or more picks for the 17th year under Candrea, who has coached an All-American every year since his third season in 1988.
All three are among national leaders entering Arizona's 21st participation in the Women's College World Series this week, with Lastrapes hitting .483, and Chambers the nation's top home run and RBI leader with 31 and 96. Leles has 23 home runs and 64 RBI.
Chambers joins former Wildcat catchers Jody Miller-Pruitt, Leah Braatz, Lety Pineda and Lindsey Collins in earning an NFCA nod. Leles joins former Cats Nicki Dennis, Krista Gomez, Pineda and Toni Mascarenas as third baseman cited. Lastrapes is in a long line of UA All-America outfielders, most recently Caitlin Lowe, Autumn Champion and Courtney Fossatti.
But none of the individual honors mean much tomorrow when UA hits the field in the fourth game of the WCWS, facing off against top-seed and No. 1-ranked Florida.
The Gators are led by All-American pitcher Stacey Nelson and a solid offense. Arizona brings the high-powered hitting attack and the program's experience in 21 world series appearances.
