TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona women's swimmers Ana Agy, Annie Chandler and Justine Schluntz have all been named First Team Academic All-America honorees by CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) and ESPN The Magazine for the women's at-large division.
The three swimmers, all teammates for the past four seasons swimming under head coach Frank Busch, make up the most representatives on the Academic All-America First Team from any one university. Additionally, all three were a part of both of Arizona's 200 medley and 400 medley national championship relay teams in 2010.
Men's swimmer Jack Brown was named a First Team Academic All-American on Tuesday after graduating in May with a 3.57 in Psychology. Arizona Swimming and Diving now has seven first team CoSIDA Academic All-Americans with Michele Mitchell (1983), Claudia Stanescu (1997), and Lindsay Berryman (2001) receiving top honors as well.
Schluntz, a Rhodes scholar and graduate student who plans to study at Oxford this Fall, earned a 4.0 over her course work of mechanical engineering this year. The Albuquerque, N.M. native won six NCAA championships swimming on relays for Arizona and garnered All-America praise 16 times throughout her career. Recently, Schluntz was a finalist for the Walter Byers Scholarship and was named the Pac-10 Conference's Toyo Tires Scholar Athlete of the Year for women's swimming.
In addition to inclusion on the first team, Schluntz was named the Women's At-Large Academic All-American of the Year. With this award, Schluntz will now enter into the CoSIDA's University Division Academic All-American of the Year voting spread across all collegiate sports with nine other finalists
Agy, a backstroke swimmer from Park City, Utah, won four NCAA championships for UA in the 200 and 400 medley relays, respectively, while also nabbing 15 All-American honors throughout her career. A business economics major, Agy graduated last week with a GPA of 3.79. This summer Agy is interning with Nike in Beaverton, Ore.
Chandler, the Wildcats' top breaststroke swimmer for the past four seasons, recorded a GPA of 3.51 while pursuing her degree in journalism in 2009-10. Chandler is an 18-time All-American, with one NCAA individual championship in the 100 breaststroke and six NCAA titles swimming on relays for UA. In May, Chandler was named the Phoenix Women's Sports Association's 2010 Athlete of the Year. Currently, Chandler holds the NCAA record in the 100 breaststroke and was a part of both the 200 and 400 medley relays in which Arizona holds the American and NCAA records.
The 15 members of the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women's At-Large University Division first team have an average 3.83 G.P.A. while four of the honorees have perfect 4.00 G.P.A.'s. There are seven swimmers, three gymnasts and two lacrosse players on the first team.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
