Sept. 27, 2010
PHOENIX, Arizona (Sept. 27)--Sun Devils or Wildcats? Wildcats or Sun Devils? Arizonans have long argued over which school has the best sports teams. Now there is finally an answer--at least for 2010. It's the University of Arizona.
On Sept. 18, State Farm presented the University of Arizona with the first State Farm Territorial Cup Series Trophy in recognition of their victory over Arizona State University in the initial rivalry series for the 2009-2010 academic year. The award ceremony took place at halftime during the University of Arizona home game against the University of Iowa.
As part of the halftime presentation, representatives from each of the 18 sports included in the State Farm Territorial Cup Series were accompanied onto the field by Tucson area State Farm Agents.
Accepting the trophy on behalf of the school was Greg Byrne, Arizona's Director of Athletics. Awarding the trophy was Robert Rowan, State Farm Agency Field Executive; John Raymond, State Farm Agency Field Consultant; and Joe Visotski, Sales Director of Reed and Barton. Reed and Barton designed and created the new trophy as well as the original Territorial Cup in 1897.
The State Farm Territorial Cup Series is a year-long rivalry competition between the University of Arizona and Arizona State University. Points are awarded to the winning team at the conclusion of each rivalry sport competition or series. The university with the most points at the end of the academic year earns the right to retain and display the State Farm Territorial Cup Series Trophy for the following year, in addition to holding state bragging rights.
The inaugural 2009 - 2010 Territorial Cup Series was won by the University of Arizona with 10.5 points to 7.5 points for ASU. For more information about the State Farm Territorial Cup Series or results to date check out www.territorialcupseries.com.
