No. 4 Arizona (21-3) used a five-run sixth to come from behind and defeat No. 23 Baylor (21-3) 9-7 in a wild game at Hillenbrand Stadium.
With two strikes, two out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the six with Baylor ahead by two runs, Kristen Arriola rocketed a ball into the gap in left center. The three runners on the bases scored to put the Cats ahead and Arriola scored herself on the play on an errant relay by the Bears.
UA was helped out by three errors in the frame by Baylor, the only three of the night. Only one of the Cats' five runs was earned.
Shelby Babcock had arguably her best outing as a Wildcat, limiting the Bears' potent offense to two hits in four and two/thirds after relieving Kenzie Fowler who gave up seven runs on eight hits in the first two and one/third.
Babcock struck out three while getting the win and improving to 8-1.
Stacie Chambers hit her 11th home run of the year, putting her eight home runs away from claiming the school record for career home runs and 13 away from the NCAA crown.
Chambers' blast, a two-run homer, gave Arizona a 2-0 lead in the first.
¬Lini Koria and Baillie Kiker also hit home runs in the game.
Both Arriola and Karissa Buchanan went 3-for-4 on the night. Seven of the nine Arizona starters recorded a hit on the evening.
Both teams scored early and often with 11 runs crossing the plate in the first three innings, prompting both squads to go to the bullpen early. Baylor starter Courtney Repka gave up three hits, including two home runs accounting for three runs, and was pulled after just an inning and two/thirds. UA's starter Fowler was pulled after two and one/third.
The offensive battle saw 22 hits, 12 of which by Arizona, and 16 total runs in the game.
Arizona took an early lead on the Chambers' home run but Baylor answered quickly. Five hits including three doubles in the second got four Baylor runs across to claim the lead, 4-2.
Kirker homered in the second to get one run back, but again, Baylor responded. After two singles, Kelsi Kettler hit a three-run blast to put Baylor in control, 7-3.
Arizona would score the next six runs including a Koria home run in the third.
Whitney Canion entered to pitch in the fourth for the Bears. Canion pitched game one of the series, Friday night, giving up just one hit in a 6-0 shutout.
She got off to a good start, shutting down the Arizona offense in the fourth and fifth as she traded blows with Babcock. Then came the bottom of the sixth.
Ashlee Brawley walked to start the inning and Brittany Lastrapes singled to put two on and no one out for Lauren Schutzler. The senior laid down a bunt and reached on a throwing error that scored Brawley and put runners on the corners for Brigette Del Ponte with no one out. Del Ponte struck out swinging. Baylor then intentionally walked Chambers which paid dividends as Koria grounded into a fielder's choice and the Bears got the force at home. With two outs and Arizona trailing by two, Arriola dug in. The junior hit a three-run triple and scored on a throwing error.
Shelby Babcock got Baylor 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to end the game.
The rubber match between the two squads takes place tomorrow, Sunday at 11:00 a.m. MST.
