TUCSON – The University of Arizona track and field team is set to kick off tomorrow’s Jim Click Shootout after wrapping up things with the combined event portion today at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.
Sophomore Fabian Zazueta was the only Wildcat in competition over the course of the two-day multi-event championship in Tucson and wrapped up the competition with an 11th place finish and a new personal decathlon record of 6466.
Zazueta set individual personal record in six of the 10 events over the course of the competition and his final score was over 400 points higher than his previous decathlon best.
Over thirty athletes competed in temperatures of over 90-degrees for the past two days to open up the annual weekend of festivities, grueling it out in one of the few combined event-only events on the season. In the end, it was two unattached athletes that took home the trophies, with Emily Pearson winning the heptathlon with 5,647 points and Damian Warner in the decathlon with 7,632 points.
The conclusion of the combined events means the Wildcats will now set their sights towards tomorrow where Ohio State, Minnesota and Washington State will be in the house for the annual Jim Click Shootout. The four teams will compete for a team title and accompanying trophy on both the men’s and women’s side in one of Arizona’s biggest early season meets.
The majority of the Arizona squad will either be opening up the 2011 outdoor season or competing in their primary event for the first time in a competition that has always produced big results for the Wildcats.
Field events are set to kick off tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the women’s hammer throw while the running events will start at noon with the steeplechase. Check out arizonawildcats.com at the conclusion of the day’s events for a complete recap of all the meet’s results.
