TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team will open its 2012 spring season as hosts of the Arizona Intercollegiate, Jan. 30-31, at Arizona National Golf Club. It is the first major college golf event of the spring season.
One of the finest college golf events in the nation, the 2012 Arizona Intercollegiate is a 54-hole event, which will be contested at Arizona National, a par 71, 6,900-yard layout. Thirty-six holes will be played on Monday, Jan. 30 with continuous play scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. MST. The final 18 holes will start at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31.
Three of the teams in the field of 13 finished the fall season ranked in the top 50 places of the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, which includes (ranking): California (12), California-Irvine, California-Riverside, Campbell, Central Arkansas, McNeese State, New Mexico (24), Pepperdine, Santa Clara, Texas-El Paso, Utah and host Arizona (49) [two squads].
Over the last 12 years of this event, Arizona has finished in the top-three places seven times, including wins in 2003 and 2004. In that same span, Wildcat golfers have claimed individual medalist honors four times, most recently in 2010 by Rich Saferian.
