Cats Cruise in Arizona Fall Classic Opener
Shelby Pendley and Chelsea Goodacre homered in Arizona's 8-0, five-inning victory over New Mexico
TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona Wildcat Softball blanked New Mexico to open the Arizona Fall Classic, 8-0. The Cats' seven-hit attack included homers from sophomores Chelsea Goodacre and Shelby Pendley. UA pitchers allowed just two hits in the contest.
UA walked off with the win when a bases-loaded error brought home the merciful run to give the Cats the 8-0 victory.
Shelby Babcock received the ball to start the game and hurled four scoreless innings of one-hit ball while striking out four Lobos. Estela Piñon pitched the final inning of the contest and struck out the side around a base hit.
Wildcat pitchers have combined to allow just four hits in 19 scoreless innings of fall ball without a walk or hit-by-pitch.
Offensively, UA used three extra-base hits to power its way past the Lobos. Freshman Mandie Perez had a double to go along with Pendley and Goodacre's home runs.
Pendley, Goodacre, Kelsey Rodriguez and Perez batted in runs in the contest. Goodacre, two, was the only Cat with multiple RBI.
Brigette Del Ponte led Arizona with two hits.
UA used crooked numbers in the first and third innings to reach the mercy rule. Arizona struck for three in the first, four in the third and had the bases loaded with no one out when the game ended in the fifth frame.
The Cats continue their participation in the Arizona Fall Classic with two games Saturday and two games Sunday. For times and a complete schedule of the Arizona Fall Classic, see the full schedule below.
